In this context, the security page has been redesigned from scratch, it is more user-friendly and a lot of new information has been added about each vulnerability.

The URL is unchanged: https://weechat.org/doc/security/.

Among the new information:

A "WSA" identifier (WeeChat Security Advisory), which is unique by vulnerability, and built like this:
WSA-YEAR-ID
(
YEAR
on 4 digits, and the
ID
starts to 1 for the first vulnerability of this year, 2 for the second, etc.).

Below this, the detail of each vulnerability is displayed, for example this detail about the latest security vulnerability, fixed in version 3.2.1 (September 2021):

It offers better and faster compression (on WeeChat side) and faster decompression (client side).

Example of a small message (53KB), default compression (20):

WeeChat: obj: 2964/53611 bytes (zstd: 95%, 0,12ms)
Client: decompressed (zstd): 53606 bytes, ratio: 95%, parsed in 0.67ms)

WeeChat: obj: 3752/53611 bytes (zlib: 94%, 0,23ms), id: quiet
Client: decompressed (zlib): 53606 bytes, ratio: 94%, parsed in 2.10ms)

Example of a big message (2.3MB), default compression (20):

WeeChat: obj: 133280/2376095 bytes (zstd: 95%, 2,97ms), id: quiet
Client: decompressed (zstd): 2376090 bytes, ratio: 95%, parsed in 15.03ms)

WeeChat: obj: 345255/2376095 bytes (zlib: 86%, 12,72ms), id: quiet
Client: decompressed (zlib): 2376090 bytes, ratio: 86%, parsed in 21.20ms)

So with the same compression level:

zstd is up to 4x faster on compression than zlib (WeeChat side)

zstd is up to 3x faster on decompression than zlib (client side)

compressed packets are up to 2.6x smaller with zstd than zlib.

For now, you have to change your password.

For the future, a new script is now available: anti_password.py.

How does it work?

When you press Enter to send text to a buffer, the script detects if the input is a password, in two ways:

If the input matches a condition: number of words, lower/upper/digit/special chars.

If a secured data value is in the input (reminder: secured data is the recommended way to store all your passwords in WeeChat) (requires WeeChat ≥ 3.1).

If a password is detected, the text is not sent to the buffer (3 times with the default config).

Note: the WeeChat commands (ie
/xxx
) are ignored and are always sent.

Options

There are 4 options to configure the script (see
/fset anti_password
for a list of options with help):

allowed_regex
: allowed regular expression (checked first)

password_condition
: the condition used to detect a password

check_secured_data
: whether the script checks for secured data (disabled, input equals secured data or secured data included in input)

max_rejects
: the number of times the same input is rejected; after this number, the input is finally sent to the buffer.

Keep your passwords safe!

A TOTP is generated with:

the secret (encoded in base 32),

the time (by default 0, which is the current time),

the number of digits (4 to 10 digits are supported, 6 is the default and recommended value).

Relay plugin

The TOTP can be used as second authentication factor in the relay plugin, with two new options:

relay.network.totp_secret: the TOTP secret, encoded in base 32

relay.network.totp_window: the allowed window: number of TOTP allowed before and after the current time window.

For example to set the secret using secured data (just replace "xxxxx" by your secret in base 32):

/secure set relay_totp_secret xxxxx
/set relay.network.totp_secret "${sec.data.relay_totp_secret}"

Then your relay client must support and send the TOTP value, in addition to the password, in the "init" command:

init password=secretpassword,totp=123456

If the password is valid and that TOTP is valid for the current time, the authentication is successful.

Infos / eval

You can also generate or validate TOTP with two new infos in WeeChat:

totp_generate: generate a TOTP

totp_validate: validate a TOTP

For example to show the value of TOTP for the secret "secretbase32", current time, with 6 digits:

/eval -n ${info:totp_generate,secretbase32,0,6}

Documentation

For now only a small part of API functions are checked.

This is done with 3 new Python scripts in directory tests/scripts/python:

unparse.py: convert Python code to other languages (including Python itself)

testapigen.py: generate scripts in all languages to test the API

testapi.py scripting API tests

The script unparse.py can convert Python code to other languages: Python, Perl, Ruby, Lua, TCL, Guile, JavaScript and PHP (new plugin in version 2.0).
The Python code is first parsed using AST (ast.parse), and then this tree is recursively scanned to produce code in Python or another language (note: only part of AST is supported, the minimum for WeeChat tests).

Example of code conversion in other languages:

$ ./unparse.py --language all
Enter the code to convert (Enter + ctrl+D to end)

The git repositories on savannah are not updated any more (and will be removed in near future).

The GitHub issue tracker can now be used to report bugs and ask for feature requests.
If the bug/task already exists in Savannah, you can complete/discuss it on Savannah, no need to open a new one on GitHub.

Pull requests are welcome in all repositories, including scripts (except for adding a script, the form on weechat.org must be used).

This configuration file is read before any other file, and the values stored inside can be used in various WeeChat or plugins/scripts options.

To add secured data, you just have to set a passphrase (not mandatory, but recommended: this will encrypt data in sec.conf instead of plain text), and then add data, for example :

/secure passphrase this is my passphrase
/secure set freenode mypassword

And then you can use that in a server password, for example :

/set irc.server.freenode.sasl_password "${sec.data.freenode}"

For more info, see
/help secure
.

Options for encryption

You can use different cipher/hash algorithms, by setting following options:

sec.crypt.hash_algo: algorithm for hash: sha224, sha256 (default), sha384, sha512

sec.crypt.cipher: cipher: aes128, aes192, aes256 (default)

sec.crypt.salt: use salt (recommended for maximum security)

sec.crypt.passphrase_file: file with the passphrase (optional)

Note: the cipher block mode is CFB.

The encryption

It is done in 3 steps:

derive a key from the passphrase (with optional salt)

compute hash of data to encrypt

encrypt the hash + data (output is: salt + encrypted hash/data)

The result is put as hexadecimal string in file sec.conf.

The decryption

It is done in 3 steps:

derive a key using salt and passphrase

decrypt hash + data

check that decrypted hash == hash of data

IRC plugin will automatically unmask a filtered join of a nick, if he spoke within N minutes after the join (N being the value of new option
irc.look.smart_filter_join_unmask
). Moreover, nick changes are tracked, and will be unmasked with the join.

Events triggering the unmask of join are: a message (can be CTCP), a notice or an update of topic.
Debian/Raspbian repositoriesurn:md5:6e38d5181eb0122d3a605d4dcec74b632013-02-13T22:13:00+01:002019-11-04T21:43:51+01:00Sébastien Helleucoredebianraspberryraspbianrepository
A Raspbian repository has been added for Raspberry Pi (thanks to Nils G. for building the packages every night).

The existing Debian repositories are being moved from flashtux.org to weechat.org, like the new Raspbian one. Repositories on weechat.org are already available, therefore it is recommended to use them now.

IMPORTANT: the WeeChat packages on debian.flashtux.org are still built every night, but they will be definitely removed on 2013-03-01.

A new section has been added on download page with a summary of all repositories: https://weechat.org/download/debian/.

It is an experimental and partial implementation of RFC 6455: fragmentation and control frames are not yet supported.

The relay plugin automatically detects WebSocket handshake and if everything is OK (origin allowed and required headers received), an answer to handshake is sent and then socket is ready to send/receive WebSocket frames.

Text and binary data are supported, so IRC (text/text) and WeeChat (text/binary) protocols are supported.

This version is displayed in /version (or /v), and is returned in IRC CTCP ("version" and "finger").

Note: the git version is set only when building a development version (not a stable release).

This is useful if you help people and want to know the exact version.

The tag "time" is now read and is used to set the time for the message displayed.

The "znc" IRC bouncer is using this tag with the capability "znc.in/server-time-iso" (name should change in the next release). For example if you are using a server called "znc" in WeeChat, you can do:

/set irc.server.znc.capabilities "znc.in/server-time-iso"

Note: with znc 1.0, the server capability was "znc.in/server-time". With znc git > 1.0, the capability is "znc.in/server-time-iso".
